Discover Achilleion Palace
One of Corfu’s most famous palaces, Achilleion Palace in the area of Gastouri, was designed using works of art depicting characters from the ancient Greek mythology and more specifically the hero of the Trojan War, Achilles.
The sculpture of Achilles is the great feature of this palace, being admired for its delicate details.
Interesting facts about Achilleion Palace
Achilleion Palace was built by the Empress of Austria, Elizabeth (commonly known as Sissy) and had belonged to Kaiser William II of Germany since the murder of Elizabeth in Switzerland in 1898.
The interior of the palace along with the gardens were decorated by Elizabeth who loved the Greek culture and thus the palace was filled up with many magnificent works of art related to Greek mythology.
The alterations that made this place a magnificent palace began after the First and Second World War, since until then was completely abandoned.
