Pontikonisi is a green and tree-covered small island located in Chalkiopoulos Lagoon opposite to the Corfu airport.

The island is located 3 kilometers south of the city center, between Kanoni, Perama, and Benitses. Pontikonisi is one of the most popular and well-known attractions of the island. 

At the top of this islet lies the Byzantine chapel of Pantokrator that was built in the 11th century and it is surrounded by dense vegetation. Access is easy, as there are several boats that take visitors from the beach below Kanoni to Pontikonisi.

From the same point, you can also visit another attraction of Corfu which is Panagia Vlacherna or Vlacherena. The Monastery of Vlacherna is a Christian monastery built on an islet about 300 meters away from the mainland. The connection to the mainland is through a footbridge, so access is quick and direct. At the edge of the island, various boats transport visitors to Pontikonisi. The Monastery is white and covered with tiles, while in the inside the visitor will be dazzled by the impressive wall paintings and the wood-carved iconostasis. 

The ideal time to visit the monastery of Vlacherna is in the afternoon when the visitor can enjoy an amazing sunset that paints the sky with enchanting colours.
