Kouloura is the most picturesque harbour on the island of Corfu. Chouchoulio is a unique location, just as its name suggests
Kouloura it is at the narrowest part of the sea channel, where only 500m of water separates Corfu from Lake Vothrotos and its neighbour country, Albania. Many small and big boats are anchored in the small port. These boats carry both local fishermen and tourists. The beach of Houhoulio is right next to the harbour covered in the shade of trees.
Chouchoulio is an unique location, just as its name suggests. It is a narrow strip of gravel and stones with a few large trees offering natural shade. Therefore, these trees and the land beneath them do not resemble a beach very much. The sea is quiet and protected from the breezes, with no waves, but the seafloor is rocky and quickly gets deeper.
The historic church of Agios Nikolaos is located in the beautiful port of Kouloura.
The church was built in the 1100s and has a beautiful story all its own. It is reported that on May 20, 1085, an Italian ship bringing the holy relic of Saint Nicholas back to Italy faced a storm and was forced to seek shelter in the Bay of Kouloura while passing through the strait between Albania and Corfu. So, in honour of the saint, the church was built, and the Quartano family moved to Kouloura.
The mansion and the wider area of Kouloura were initially owned by the Quartano family, Corfiot nobles who may have come from Venice (their coat of arms was embroidered on the baldacchin of Saint Spyridon church in the old town of Corfu. The manor was built during the 15th century, right on the waterfront of the natural harbor– following the architectural style of the time, and is an excellent example of fortification architecture. At the entrance of the mansion there is a church located, built in honor of St. Nicholas of Petra.
From the hands of the Quartano family, the estate with all its possessions and the olive groves, passed to a branch of the Gennatas family from Kefalonia. The Gennatas family originated from Constantinople. In 1498, after the fall of the castles of Methoni and Koroni by the Ottoman Turks, the family emmigrated to Kefalonia. During the 18th century, a part of the Gennatas family emmigrated to Corfu. Many members of the Gennatas family became prominent members of Corfiot and Greek society. Ioannis Gennatas, born in that very mansion in 1777, studied law at Padova, and practiced law next to the distinguished lawyer Joanne Vizzini. He returned to the newly-founded state of Greece in 1828, where its governor, Count Ioannis Kapodistrias, invited him to take part in the committee for the foundation of the Greek law. One year later, he was appointed Minister of Justice. In 1833, he was elected as member of the parliament and Public Prosecutor General in the state of Ionian Islands. In his honor, a narrow cobbled street that leads to Spianáda (Esplanade) in the Old Town of Corfu, was given his name.
