The island of Vidos is a green islet opposite the city of Corfu. It is the first thing the visitors see when they arrive at the port of Corfu from the sea. Even from a distance, one can see how many trees there are on this beautiful little island.

The island has a wonderful nature and in combination with the crystal-clear waters, it is an ideal choice for a close escape from the city center. For this reason, dozens of locals visit it every day.

Interesting facts about Vidos

Besides its natural beauty, Vidos is an island with rich history too. References to the island can be found in ancient texts from the 5th century BC. In the 8th century AD, the first Christian church was built there by the Apostles Jason and Sosipatros. Since then, the island has been a vacation destination for the rich families. Due to its strategic location, many have used it as a stronghold in recent years, creating forts. When the Ionian Islands united with Greece, all the fortresses that were built till then got demolished.

Also in Vidos, an impressive sight is the Mausoleum of fallen Serbian soldiers who lost their lives in Corfu between 1915 and 1918. Serbian soldiers found themselves in Corfu under King Peter’s command, when pursued by Austrian troops. The people of Corfu hosted the Serbs and since then they have been united with relations of deep friendship. In the Mausoleum located in Vidos, the Serbs hold a memorial service in honor of their dead.

Currently, Vidos is under the responsibility of the municipality of Corfu and occasionally hosts children’s summer camps and activities. At the moment, there is a restaurant in Vidos where the visitors can enjoy snacks, drinks or meals. Access to the island is easy and fast because during the summer months there is a boat that transfers visitors with regular routes, but one can also go there by private boat. A visit to the Vidos island is an excellent close escape for a swim and a breath of fresh air under the pine trees. Its wonderful waters and enchanting nature make it a real gem and a paradise on earth.
