Historical facts
The village of Perithia has been built since at least the 3rd century BC, but it flourished especially when, in the 14th century, many inhabitants from the coasts fled to the mountainous areas to be protected from pirate raids and malaria from mosquito bites. The villagers made their living mainly from animal husbandry and agriculture of limited products. From the 1950s onwards these risks were eliminated and people began to migrate to the coasts again, as they started working in the upcoming tourist business.
