Discover Mon Repos

It is an ideal place for a refreshing walk under the shade of trees, where you can enjoy the tranquility of nature just three kilometers outside the city centre of Corfu. Within the area, the visitor encounters the various uses of the place over time. Walking through the forest, the visitor is able to explore the foundations of buildings of the old city, such as the temple of Hera, while inside the area lies the villa of Mon Repos, built in 1831, with a spectacular sea view. Another surprise for the ones who visit Mon Repos is the picturesque beach of Kardaki

Interesting facts about Mon Repos

The villa was built as a summer residence for the British Lord High Commissioner of the United States of the Ionian Islands, Frederik Adam, and his second wife (a Corfiot), Diamantina Palatino.

After the Ionian Islands united with Greece (1864) the villa was granted to King George I as a summer residence.

It was named Mon Repos (French for “My Rest”) because it was a place of rest for the Greek Royals in the past century.

It is the birthplace of several royals, including Queen Elizabeth’s II late husband, his Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

In recent years Greek courts granted Mon Repos to the Municipality of Corfu. Today the villa houses the Museum of Paleopolis.

According to the legend, if you drink from the spring water located next to Kardaki beach, you will stay on the island forever.

Access to Mon Repos is easy by bus or taxi as it is only 3 km away from Corfu town. The park of Mon Repos is open every day from 08:00 until 20:00 and the museum is accepting visitors every day except Thursday from 8:30 until 15:30.
