Corfu Agelokastro

Angelokastro is one of the oldest and most important Byzantine Castles in Greece

Discover Agelokastro Castle

It is located on the highest peak of the Northeast shoreline, near Paleokastritsa. The castle was built on the edge of a steep cliff above the sea, so if the weather is good, visitors can see the whole island from the top. Visiting Agelokastro is like traveling back in time, while you can enjoy the breathtaking view and the magical sunset.

Interesting facts about Agelokastro

For many centuries Agelokastro played an important role in the fate of the island, due to its geographical location.

The name “Agelokastro” comes from Michael-Komninos (also known as Michael-Angel) who conquered Corfu in 1214, built the castle, and named it after his father.

The visitors have access to Agelokastro from the village square of Krini. The road leads to a parking lot and from there you climb several steps to arrive to the castle.

In the beginning of the pathway that leads to the fortress there are the foundations of the one-room church of Agios Ioannis.

At the highest point of the fortress there is the citadel with its main entrance to the North, which is protected by a circular tower.

At the highest point of the acropolis is the temple of Taxiarchis (Archangel-Michael) that was built in 1734.
