Kanalia is a charming suburb of the city of Corfu, located just 2 kilometers away from the city center. This delightful settlement gets its name from the canal (Canal) that was constructed during the Venetian occupation and connected the Halikiopoulos lagoon, located at the current airport, with the Ionian Sea. Although the canal no longer exists, it is mentioned in various manuscripts and books of travelers and historians who visited Corfu from the 12th to the 15th century.
Originally, Kanalia comprised three communities: Arvanitokanalo, named after North Epirus refugees who settled in the area, the Roman Channel, named after the local Corfiots who inhabited it, and Agia Eleni, named after the church of Agia Eleni. Today, Kanalia also encompasses the settlements of Katakalou, Agia Gourgi, and Kallithea.
Primarily a residential area, Kanalia has seen a recent surge in commercial businesses developing along its main streets. Visitors can stroll along these streets, taking in the local atmosphere and enjoying the various shops, restaurants, and cafes that have sprung up in recent years.
Despite its close proximity to the city of Corfu, Kanalia maintains a peaceful and laid-back atmosphere. Visitors can relax and unwind in the tranquil surroundings, enjoying the beauty of the area’s natural landscape. Take a stroll through the charming streets, visit the church of Agios Nikolaos, or explore the local history and culture.
